Messi's final World Cup: a record 34 appearances in 2026
The 2026 World Cup was, in all likelihood, Lionel Messi’s last. At 39 years and 25 days, he became the second-oldest player ever to appear in a World Cup final and the oldest outfield player in the match’s history.
Extending the record
Across the tournament Messi took his all-time FIFA World Cup appearance record to 34 matches, surpassing every player before him. He had arrived in the final unbeaten in Argentina’s previous 13 World Cup matches.
A worthy farewell, if it is one
Even in defeat to Spain, Messi’s tournament reinforced his standing as the competition’s most-capped player. Together with Nicolás Otamendi (38), he anchored an Argentine side that had won the 2022 title and reached back-to-back finals.
The bigger picture
Whether or not he plays on, Messi leaves the World Cup stage as its most prolific appearance-maker and, since 2022, a champion — a career arc few could have scripted better.
