Spain's new generation: Yamal, Cubarsí and the 2026 World Cup
Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph was as much about the future as the present. A teenage core — headed by Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí — became only the fourth and fifth teenagers ever to appear in a World Cup final and leave it as champions.
The teenagers who won it
Before Yamal and Cubarsí, only Pelé (1958), Giuseppe Bergomi (1982) and Kylian Mbappé (2018) had played a World Cup final as teenagers and won. Both Spaniards made eight appearances at the tournament, a record for players under 20.
A balanced squad
Around them, Rodri anchored midfield to win the Golden Ball, while Unai Simón’s goalkeeping was historically solid. The blend of youth and experience echoed Spain’s 2010 golden generation, but with a more vertical, intense style.
What comes next
With Yamal still a teenager and Cubarsí only 19 at the final, Spain enter the next World Cup cycle as clear favourites to defend their crown — and as the first nation holding both senior world titles.
