2023 Women's World Cup: Spain win their first title

On 20 August 2023, Spain won the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time, beating England 1-0 at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Captain Olga Carmona scored the only goal in the 29th minute.

A first for Spain

The victory made Spain the fifth nation to win the women’s world title, after the United States, Germany, Norway and Japan. It was the first edition to feature 32 teams, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Stars of the tournament

Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament, while teenage forward Salma Paralluelo was named Young Player. England’s Mary Earps won the Golden Glove.

A growing game

The 2023 final drew a crowd of 75,784 and capped a tournament that broke attendance and broadcast records, accelerating the global growth of the women’s game.
